"Shukran" (UPDATED)

Oh, oh, oh, watch out, wingnut freak out coming, President Obama said an Arabic word:

King Abdullah also noted the ties between the two nations, which he said go back to the 1930's and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the late King Abdul-Aziz.

He endorsed Obama's election win, calling him "a distinguished man who deserves to be in this position."

"Shukran," Obama said, which is "thank you" in Arabic.

Whoa, boy, the wingnuts are going to lose it!  Because, like, Nobama NoNever Birth Certificate Mooselem Sleeper Agent Communistofascistosexualolistohonkhonkhonksqueediddlybingbongsnortsnort!

Ahem.

Steve Benen points out that Obama's not the only one usin' that funny talk:

But before anyone gets too excited about this, Spencer Ackerman reminds us that Gen. David Petraeus told the press last fall, as he was wrapping up his tenure as U.S. commander in Iraq, "As-Salamu 'Alaykum, masa' al-kheir, good afternoon to all of you, and shukran jaziilan for joining us for today's roundtable."

*Wingnut heads exploding everywhere!  Just. Cold. LOSING IT*

Because, wait, they're supposed to love Petraeus, right, because remember how they were all having night sweats over MoveOn.org's Petraeus/Betray-us ad?  Right.  Goodness.

Steve also adds:

...that none other than George W. Bush told his Iraqi hosts, "Shukran," late last year, shortly before having a shoe thrown at him.

ZOMG!!!!!111!!!

Anyway, Ben Smith found it notable enough, but one of his readers reminded him that Dubya said it too, so maybe he'll pipe down, but I'm sure some idiot(s) will make hay of this, and I'll update the post when I find those reactions.

UPDATE:  Well, damn, that didn't take long.  I said a wingnut writer would lose it over this and here's Michael Goldfarb, most famous for being John McCain's most laughably pathetic spokesperson, and he's in fine form:

Obama has said before that he speaks "barely passable Spanish" and "a smattering of Swahili," as well as some Bahasa from his youth in Indonesia. But Obama has at other times denied speaking a foreign language, saying in July of last year, "I don't speak a foreign language. It's embarrassing!" And even today, Michelle Obama is delivering the commencement address at Washington Math, Science, Technology Public Charter School, where Mark Knoller reports that she implored graduates to learn a language, and that both she and the president "regret they never learned another language."

It seems there is some legitimate confusion on just what languages Obama speaks, and as far as Arabic, the only real hint has came from Nick Kristof, who heard Obama recite the Muslim call to prayer in Arabic and with a "first-rate accent" back in 2007. With even the White House now smearing Obama as a Muslim, one wonders if the president hasn't been concealing some greater fluency with the language of the Koran.

OOOOOOH.  I bet George W. Bush was ALSO concealing greater fluency with the language of the Koran when HE said Shukran.  I bet I'm concealing my OWN greater fluency with the language of the Koran, because I can type "shukran" really fast without any errors!  And wait, what the hell is a "first-rate" Arabic accent?  Seriously.  Like...as if there's only one dialect.

Also, as to the quote about the White House "smearing" Obama for having "Muslim roots," if ye are literate, read the damn thing for yourself.  Michael Goldfarb obviously is illiterate.  But if you've seen him on teevee, you knew that.

What a grade-A dingus.
